From our gate here at Kolob Canyons Ranch, you can see the red rock walls of Zion’s west district rising less than four miles away. As you drive up the long driveway to Treehouse, the views just keep getting better. After seven years of living here, I’ve sent hundreds of guests to the same handful of trails, viewpoints, and local spots — and watched which ones they come back raving about. Here are the seven I recommend most.
1. Hike the Kolob Canyons Trail Loop
The Kolob Canyons Trail is the signature hike in this area, and for good reason. This 4-mile roundtrip trail takes you through some of the most stunning canyon scenery you’ll find anywhere, with views of towering red cliffs, seasonal waterfalls, and narrow canyon walls. The trail is moderately difficult, making it accessible for most fitness levels, and the payoff is absolutely worth every step. Start early in the morning to beat the crowds and enjoy the peaceful solitude of these incredible canyons. The shade from the canyon walls is also a huge bonus during hot summer months.
2. Visit Zion National Park’s Kolob Canyons Section
Many visitors don’t realize that the Kolob Canyons area is actually part of Zion National Park’s less-crowded northwest section. With a valid Zion entrance pass, you can explore this scenic area without dealing with the massive crowds at the main canyon. The visitor center here provides excellent information about geology, wildlife, and hiking options. Stop in to grab a map and chat with the rangers—they have fantastic insider tips about the best times to visit and hidden gems in the area.
3. Drive the Kolob Canyons Scenic Byway
If you prefer a more leisurely experience, take the scenic drive along the Kolob Canyons road. This 5-mile drive winds through stunning red rock formations with several pullouts and viewpoints perfect for photos and short walks. The road ends at a parking area with excellent vistas of the surrounding canyons. It’s a great option if you have limited mobility or if you just want to enjoy the scenery without a strenuous hike.
4. Explore Cedar Breaks National Monument
Just a short drive from Kolob Canyons, Cedar Breaks offers another perspective on Utah’s incredible geology. This natural amphitheater features colorful hoodoos and spires that change color throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky. The scenic drive and rim trails are spectacular, and on clear nights, Cedar Breaks is designated as an International Dark Sky Park—perfect for stargazing. The higher elevation here means cooler temperatures, which is refreshing during hot summer months.
5. Discover the Red Hollow Trail
For a less-crowded alternative, the Red Hollow Trail offers beautiful scenery without the masses. This trail features red rock formations, sandy washes, and glimpses of the surrounding canyons. It’s a bit more challenging to find information about, which means fewer tourists, but locals know it’s well worth seeking out. Bring plenty of water and sturdy hiking boots—the terrain is rugged but incredibly rewarding.
6. Visit the Nearby Towns of Springdale and Hurricane
The charming town of Springdale sits at the entrance to Zion National Park and offers excellent restaurants, galleries, and shops. It’s only a 30-minute drive from Kolob Canyons. Hurricane, another nearby town, has local dining and services. Both communities offer a nice place to grab dinner after a day of hiking and exploring. Support local businesses and get a real taste of Utah hospitality.
7. Enjoy Sunrise and Sunset Views
Time your visit to catch the sunrise or sunset at one of the scenic viewpoints. The way the light hits the red rocks during these golden hours is absolutely magical. Bring a camera, a blanket, and perhaps some snacks—you’ll want to linger and soak in these peaceful moments. Sunset at the end of the scenic drive is particularly stunning.
