Southern Utah is a treasure trove of natural wonders and endless trails to explore, and here at Kolob Canyons Ranch, you’re at the doorstep of adventure. Our 86-acre paradise shares a boundary with Bureau of Land Management (BLM) territory, offering a sprawling canvas of untamed wilderness waiting for you to discover. But fear not, you don’t need to be an off-road enthusiast to partake in the exploration. In fact, many of the most sought-after trails in the area are perfect for hiking, catering to those who prefer solid ground beneath their feet, or even horseback riding if that’s your passion. In this haven, we ensure that everyone gets to have it their way.
As you prepare for your journey, a simple Google search for “best things to do in Southern Utah” or “best places to visit in Southern Utah” can yield a wealth of information. Alternatively, you can employ apps like AllTrails or OnX Offroad to get a head start on your adventure planning. These tools provide insights into the trails’ proximity to our homes, their level of difficulty, and a sense of what awaits you on your expedition.
The abundance of trails in Southern Utah caters to every skill level, from beginners to seasoned hikers. However, it’s crucial to consider the group’s collective capabilities and err on the side of caution, opting for trails suitable for the least experienced among you. This ensures everyone’s safety and enjoyment. We say this not to underestimate our guests but to ensure they embark on their adventures fully informed. The wilderness can be both exhilarating and challenging, and it’s our priority to keep everyone safe.
Before we dive into the top three most popular trails, it’s worth noting that right here on the ranch, you have wide expanses of land to explore. With Treehouse occupying 40 acres and Lodge spread across 46 acres, you’re free to step outside and lose yourself in the beauty of this untouched terrain. While there are no designated trails, the sparse ground cover, dotted with juniper trees and various pines, makes for relatively easy exploration. Rest assured, the fence line will serve as your guide, ensuring you never stray too far from the comforts of home.
Now, let’s embark on a journey through the top three local trails, always mindful of the weather’s blessings or challenges.
1. Kanarra Falls: Kanarra Falls is a true gem, nestled in the nearby town of Kanarraville, just a stone’s throw from our ranch. This 3.7-mile out-and-back trail, though relatively short, requires tickets for access. The trailhead offers essential amenities, including restrooms and a boot washing station—an unusual feature born of necessity. Kanarra Falls takes you through a stream, often less than a foot deep, ensuring you’ll get wet and possibly a tad muddy. An important note: pets are not allowed, as the stream feeds the local watershed, and we must all play our part in preserving this natural wonder. The ladder you’ll encounter on the trail is a test of balance and fear of heights, so exercise caution. And remember, avoid this trail if rain is in the forecast to steer clear of potential flash floods in slot canyons.
2. Kanarraville Mountain Road: For a truly epic adventure, consider the 58.4-mile point-to-point Kanarraville Mountain Road. While this may seem intimidating for hikers, it can be a 24-hour endurance test. A more accessible approach is to explore it with an off-road vehicle. We often venture out with our 4×4, allowing us to embark on short hikes in the most scenic areas, complete with coolers and other conveniences. This method offers unparalleled flexibility and lets you savor your favorite spots without feeling rushed. Although two-wheel drive vehicles can navigate the trail, we recommend something with extra ground clearance, like a truck or SUV. ATVs and side by sides are common sights, providing even more versatility and speed. You can explore Kolob Reservoir about half way along the trail where you can enjoy the lake on rental kayaks and other small boats. There are campgrounds here, too, if your in the mood for extra adventure. Be sure to call ahead for availability and reservations.
3. Spring Creek Canyon Trail: A local favorite, the Spring Creek Canyon trail offers a delightful 5.3-mile in-and-out hike, just across the valley from the ranch. The trailhead features a small parking lot with no admission or parking fees. The journey begins through lush meadowlands, with the canyon’s striking red walls closing in on you as you venture deeper. The moderately challenging hike crosses the stream and presents crisscrossing paths that reveal the heart of the canyon. Depending on the season, the trail may be less apparent, so bringing along the AllTrails app with GPS is advisable. For those who start early on a clear morning, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking sunrise illuminating the upper canyon walls. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed, while horseback riders are frequent companions. In summer, aim to conclude your hike by noon to avoid the midday heat as you return through open areas closer to the trailhead. With its intriguing features and stunning landscapes, Spring Creek Canyon is a fantastic family trail.
As we conclude this glimpse into the local favorites, remember that the Kolob Canyons entrance to the west district of Zion National Park beckons, just a short drive south on the 15 freeway. While this adventure may require a National Parks pass, it’s an experience worth every penny. For nature enthusiasts and trailblazers, Southern Utah is a must-visit destination, teeming with unforgettable natural wonders.
